Traditionally, hand-made bamboo and cane products hold a pride of place in Bhutanese homes. They are everywhere – as storage containers, baskets for carrying, food utensils, musical instruments, bows and arrows, walls for houses, fences, ropes and floor mats, name any. The abundunce of cane and bamboo in Bhutan’s forests coupled with multi-dimensional uses has made Tsarzo – cane and bamboo craft – the most widespread skill in the traditional cottage industry.
Today, the advent of modern plastic and metallic products may have somewhat pushed cane and bamboo products to the fringe but the craft continues to carve a niche for itself as gift and decorative pieces adorning homes and offices with its effusive colours and patterns.
More significantly, the craft remains a vital source of income for the craftspeople in communities across Bhutan.
