Today (23/04/2024), Bhutan celebrates the vibrant tapestry of its cultural heritage through the lens of Zorig Chusum- the thirteen arts and crafts – that has been passed down through generations. Dating back centuries, Zorig Chusum has been an integral part of Bhutanese society, with each art form deeply intertwined with the country’s history and spiritual beliefs.
Originally established by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, in the 17th century, Zorig Chusum was intended to preserve Bhutan’s unique cultural identity and promote spiritual well-being. Over the years, these cherished crafts have flourished under the guidance of skilled artisans, embodying the essence of Bhutanese craftsmanship and creativity. From the intricate patterns adorning thangka paintings to the timeless elegance woven into embroidered textiles, each art form encapsulates a narrative of resilience and boundless creativity.
The National Zorig Day was celebrated at the National Institute of Zorig Chusum, Thimphu with exhibition of amazing zorig arts by the students and artists. It was a celebration of heritage, talent, and the enduring spirit of Bhutanese craftsmanship.
Join us in wishing a Happy National Zorig Day to all, as we embrace and cherish the beauty of Bhutanese culture! #NationalZorigDay #ZorigChusum #Bhutaneseartisans
