Bhutanese painting is usually expressed in the thangkha tradition, a canvas scroll painted with natural pigments and mineral paints.
Paintings are also commonly found on temple walls as iconographic renditions of deities used in the practice of Buddhism. Bhutanese thangkhas are well known for their dedicated use of natural colours and their strict adherence to scale. The images represent a wide range of deities and spiritual images, the most popular of which are the Buddha, the medicine Buddha, and the deity of compassion and wisdom.
