Before the advent of melamine and crockery, Bhutanese used hand-turned wood bowls and plates. These woodenwares are hand-turned individually and require two men to work simultaneously to work the lathe and to shape the product. The most highly prized are wooden bowls and containers made of blur wood, polished by hand with dried leaves and lacquered layer by layer to give it a fine finish.
